Nigeria is the most populous country in the whole of Africa and hence it has a large number of people in the armed forces as well. Nigeria has often been involved with the United Nations in keeping peace keeping forces in other parts of Africa which may be under civil war, violence or strife. Whether it was the Civil war in Congo or the internal strife in Sierra Leone or even to reduce the violence in Sudan, Liberia and the Ivory Coast, the military in Nigeria was posted there. The total strength of the armed forces in Nigeria is about 1 lakh twenty thousand. The armed forces consist of the Army, the Air force and the Navy.

The Nigerian Army: The Army recruits maximum number of the people from among the three disciplines. The Army recruits almost one lakh people. There are two divisions in the Army that is the armoured division and the composite division that recruit people.

The Army can be used to maintain peace and calm in regions as the peace keeping forces as had been demonstrated through out Africa but can also attack if required. A life in the Army requires people with high discipline who are made into dignified officers for the rest of their lives. The officers of the Army are trained in battalions as well as fast attacks.

The Nigerian Navy: The Nigerians are trained in Navy as well as the western coast lies in the Gulf of Guinea. The Navy has about seven thousand officials associated with it and there are still opportunities for people to join.

The Nigerian Air force: The Air force of Nigeria has about nine thousand officers right now. The Air force too provides great opportunities to people.

The most productive industry in Nigeria is the Oil and the Petroleum industry and hence it attracts workers from all parts of Africa and beyond. The petroleum industry is the most important industry in Nigeria and it has allowed the country pay off the debts that the country was into. In all the major cities in the country people are required to work in this industry. This industry requires both skilled and unskilled workers with variable pays.

The people who are most wanted in such jobs are the Geophysicists, Geologists, Petrophysicists, Geoscience experts, Geoscientists and the Explorationalists. The Geologists, Geophysicists and the Geoscientists are the people who deal with the science concerning the history of the Earth and the life in it. In order to be able to discover oil and petroleum resources, such professionals are highly sought after in Nigeria. These are people who are paid adequately and work on site basis that is if the work on aparticular site is done then they may move to the next site.

The oil and the petroleum industry in Nigeria is huge and hence the employment opportunities here are found in abundance. Workers are also required for digging, excavating, extracting and monitoring the petroleum refinery sites. Chemical technicians and engineers are also required to maintain the steam engines, turbines, motors and steam boilers. Even today there are almost eight thousand vacant jobs in this industry in Nigeria. In spite of having a huge population in the country, The problem is that here are not enough skilled professionals or people who have enough knowledge of engineering and geo physics and hence the companies have to recruit professionals from abroad. Thus this industry offers tremendous opportunities which can be utilized by people from any country.

Since oil was discovered in the wilderness of Nigeria, it became one of the biggest oil exporters in the World. Nigeria witnessed an oil boom in the 1970′s. The country is also very rich in biodiversity. Mostly the major industries are all located in the populous cities of Nigeria which are Lagos, kano, Ibadan, kaduna and Abuja which is also the capital of Nigeria. The rich oil reserves have given a chance for the oil and petroleum industry in the country to flourish and this industry was the main reason because of which Nigeria was able to pay off its debts to the Paris Club otherwise Nigeria would have remained engulfed in poverty.

The Agriculture industry is also highly prominent in Nigeria as most of its people are traditionally farmers. Crops such as corn and maize are often cultivated here. Groundnut, Sugarcane, coconut and other citrus fruits are also grown here. But the Agriculture Industry received stiff competition from the oil and petroleum industry and hence wasn’t doing well recently. Thus, the country which used to export a lot of food started importing food to make ends meet. Now, the Government has made reforms to rejuvenate the Agriculture Industry in Nigeria.

The cities of Lagos, kano and Onitsha are the homes of several industries like the Cotton, Textile, Garment manufacturing as well as the Leather industry which thrive in these cities. It is also the home to the manufacturing units of some of the big names in the Car manufacturing industry like Peugeot and General Motors. Apart from being a major manufacturing sector, Nigeria also is home to making T shirts and processing food.

Nigeria is the most populous country in the whole of Africa with a population of over a hundred and fifty million. It also has the eight highest population among the countries of the World. The Nigerian Naira is the currency of Nigeria.

When we talk of the Nigerian economy we can not ignore the role that the oil and petroleum industry has to play in it. Almost half of the Gross Domestic Product of the country is sue to the oil and the petroleum industry. The OPEC that is the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting countries is formed of twelve oil exporting countries. Nigeria was one of the founding nations of this organization. Nigeria is currently the eight highest exporter of petroleum in World. Agriculture is also one of the main sectors in Nigeria and more than half the people in Nigeria are associated with this sector. But, the Agriculture sector has not seen any growth in the previous years and urgent reforms are needed to bring the Agriculture sector back to life. What used to be once the backbone of the Nigerian economy just about manages to be a contributor to it. So much so that once Nigeria was used to grow food on its own and in fact used to export a lot of it, but now it has to import stuff from other countries. Textile, clothing and the leather industry are some of the other industries in Nigeria that are doing well now.

But Nigerian economy has also been strong because it was able to pay off its debt entirely that it owned to the Paris club. The debt of about $30 billion was paid off in the year 2006. No other African country before Nigeria had been able to fully pay off it s debt. The Nigerian economy is now witnessing economic growth which augurs well for the people residing in Nigeria.

Nigeria is a third World Nation. It became an independent nation in the year 1960 from the United Kingdom. The organization for African unity which is now known as the African Union had Nigeria as one of its founding members. Nigeria is a part of the United Nations and has worked with the UN in ensuring that there is peace in the region of Africa. When Congo was torn by civil war, the United Nations along with Nigeria sent troops over there in order to bail the people of Cong out and also to maintain peace and calm in the country.

Oil and the petroleum industry has been one of the key reasons for Nigeria to have a dialogue with the other countries of the World. Since Nigeria was rich in these resources, it became one of the biggest exporters of petrol to the World and hence the association with the other countries began. Nigeria was one of the founding nation members of the Organisation of the Petroleum exporting countries in the year 1971. Most of the big nations in the world like the United States of America and the People’s republic of china are involved in oil trading with Nigeria. The oil resources are one of the most important reasons for Nigeria to being able to attract Foreign Direct Investments.

Nigeria is also a part of the Non Aligned Movement or the NAM as it is popularly known as. Over the years when the Nigerian economy wasn’t doing well, brain drain started affecting Nigeria and most of the people of Nigeria began migrating to other countries in search of jobs and a higher standard of living. The United States of America was a preferred destination and it has a large population of Nigerians in the country.

For Doctors and Medical professionals there are tons of jobs available in Nigeria. Generally, the people from the Medical field are required for the following posts. Clinic Managers of privately owned clinics. Doctors as well as nurses at hospitals and nursing homes. Nannies and housekeepers are also needed to take care of the young and the aged.

Currently, there is a national health policy in the country that helps take care of the Primary sector of healthcare, secondary sector of healthcare as well as tertiary sector of health care. Thus the National health policy is aimed at providing health care to all people irrespective of any religious or nationality barriers. People who are trained in the Medical field come to Nigeria and join hospitals and nursing homes and begin treating patients. Hospitals are located in all the major cities of the country like lagos, kano, zaria and jos.

There are many medical colleges as well that teach young budding students and help them become doctors. In the medical colleges also doctors are recruited. So if you are from the medical field and are also interested in teaching, then you could be fit to teach in any of the many medical colleges in Nigeria.

Amongst the various sources for Employment in Nigeria the Internet too offers great prospects for people willing to work online. The Nigeria Internet group is a recently opened group in Nigeria. It is basically a (NGO) Non Government organization that conducts various work shops, seminars and exhibitions in the country to educate the people of the various employment opportunities offered by the Internet in Nigeria and also helps competent people in getting jobs on the Internet. Any one who is interested in the Internet can be a part of this organization irrespective of his academic background and the employment sector that he comes for. If you are willing to enroll and become a member of this organization which may help you in understanding the true potential of the Internet as an employment opportunity, then you may visit the following web site

http://www.nig.org.ng/

There are about twelve Internet service providers all over Nigeria, all of whom are engaged in providing internet connectivity to all parts of this country. Apart from these major twelve, there are about twenty six more providers but which are not very active.

In days when Brain Drain is affecting Nigeria, there are many opportunities being offered to work on the internet in order to stem that drain. Thus fresh graduates as well as working professional can sit online and make money wherever they are that is whether they are in Nigeria and abroad. You may work from home or use the online job as another job that gets you another income. Or even college going students can use the internet as a source of jobs that can easily offer them enough money which can be used for pocket money or even to fund their education.

The Education sector is one of the most important sectors in any country. And hence in Nigeria too the Education sector is currently booming. Public schools, private schools, colleges, higher education centres as well as centres for research and development all require teachers, professors and the support teaching staff.

In schools and colleges, teachers are required to teach subjects like history and Geography. English and English literature are also commonly taught. Teachers are also required for teaching subjects related to Science like botany, zoology, biology, physics and chemistry.

In the Nigerian capital of Abuja and the cities of Lagos and Sokota, there are many schools coming up which offer jobs in teaching. Also teachers for specialization courses colleges are needed. Since, Nigeria is a developing country, there are many Medical, engineering, Management and Arts colleges coming up. Generally, for specialization courses, the students used to travel abroad for higher studies. But now that institutions are coming up, there are many job options for people in the Education sector also.

In the year 1976, Education was made free at the primary level. So, the Government is making efforts to provide free education to all young children. Though the literacy rate is not very high and is about 50%.

The famous institutions in Nigeria are the Ahmadu Bello University established in the year 1962 and the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife. Other institutions that provide education are the University of lagos which is located in the most populous city in Nigeria and the University of Nigeria in Nsukka. Professors teaching higher education subjects are required in these colleges as Nigeria has a very high population of young students.

The kind of opportunities in the banking sector in Nigeria are immense as it is a growing economy. Managers are required to be branch managers, power managers, infrastructure managers as well as Assets management managers. Thus graduates in finance and banking are highly sought after.
