Nigeria is a third World Nation. It became an independent nation in the year 1960 from the United Kingdom. The organization for African unity which is now known as the African Union had Nigeria as one of its founding members. Nigeria is a part of the United Nations and has worked with the UN in ensuring that there is peace in the region of Africa. When Congo was torn by civil war, the United Nations along with Nigeria sent troops over there in order to bail the people of Cong out and also to maintain peace and calm in the country.

Oil and the petroleum industry has been one of the key reasons for Nigeria to have a dialogue with the other countries of the World. Since Nigeria was rich in these resources, it became one of the biggest exporters of petrol to the World and hence the association with the other countries began. Nigeria was one of the founding nation members of the Organisation of the Petroleum exporting countries in the year 1971. Most of the big nations in the world like the United States of America and the People’s republic of china are involved in oil trading with Nigeria. The oil resources are one of the most important reasons for Nigeria to being able to attract Foreign Direct Investments.

Nigeria is also a part of the Non Aligned Movement or the NAM as it is popularly known as. Over the years when the Nigerian economy wasn’t doing well, brain drain started affecting Nigeria and most of the people of Nigeria began migrating to other countries in search of jobs and a higher standard of living. The United States of America was a preferred destination and it has a large population of Nigerians in the country.
